If you want to walk to dinner, bars, the harbor, and the ferry, Greenport usually makes the most sense. If you want beach access and a more tucked-away weekend, East Marion and Southold start to feel like a better fit. And if your ideal trip is quieter, more spread out, and less centered on one busy village, Peconic, Cutchogue, Jamesport, and Orient are all worth a look too.
Greenport stays
The Menhaden
One of the best ways to do a polished Greenport weekend. It is right in the village, easy to walk from to restaurants and the waterfront, and the rooftop is a real draw when the weather is good, with views over the harbor and Shelter Island.
Harbor Front Inn
A strong choice if you want to be right in the center of town with water views and the easiest possible access to shops, the ferry, and a no-car-needed kind of stay.
American Beech
More of a village-stay feel than a resort feel, and definitely one of the younger, more vibrant places to stay in Greenport. It is tucked into historic Sterling Square, where you are right near 1943 Pizza Bar, Brix & Rye, Black Llama Bar, and American Beech’s own restaurant, so it works especially well if you want the trip to lean into dinner, drinks, and being in the middle of things.
Silver Sands
Beachfront and stylish without being stiff. Good if you want the North Fork to feel like an actual coastal break instead of just a village weekend. The private beach, spa, and on-site dining make it a better fit when the stay itself is part of the point.
Sound View
One of the better choices if your priority is water views, private beach access, and a little more breathing room than the center of Greenport offers. It also has more going on than a simple hotel stay, with yoga, fire pits, a great piano bar, and The Halyard attached, which makes it especially good if you want your stay to feel like its own destination.
Hotel Moraine
A very good option if you want more of a resort feel than an in-town village stay. Hotel Moraine sits on a bluff overlooking the Long Island Sound and leans into that setting with water-view rooms, a private beach, a heated pool, and family-friendly amenities, so it works well for couples, families, and anyone who wants the hotel itself to be a bigger part of the trip.

Southold and East Marion stays
The Shoals
One of the stronger choices if you want a quieter home base with a design-forward feel and easy access to Southold rather than a village-center stay. The Shoals overlooks the marina and Shelter Island, and it leans into that waterside setting with suite-style accommodations and a more tucked-away coastal feel. Another part of the appeal is that it is easy to settle in there and let the stay itself shape the weekend a little.
Vine + Sand
A good Southold option if you want something more personal than a standard hotel. Vine + Sand is set in a modernized historic farmhouse dating back to the 1820s, and its whole appeal is the mix of restored architectural details, contemporary art and design, and easy access to the North Fork Wine Trail. It feels especially right if you want your stay to be quieter, design-conscious, and a little more intimate.
Coffey House Bed & Breakfast
A good East Marion choice if you want a quieter stay between Greenport and Orient with more of a classic bed-and-breakfast feel. The Coffey House describes itself as a romantic and restful retreat, and it is a better fit when you want something smaller, more personal, and less hotel-like than the bigger North Fork stays. Discover Long Island also notes its four guest rooms with private baths and more traditional bed-and-breakfast atmosphere.
Quintessentials
Another East Marion classic, especially if you like a more traditional inn-style stay with a little extra built in. Quintessentials combines accommodations with a full-service spa, and it is tucked between Peconic Bay and Long Island Sound, just minutes from Greenport and Orient. Rooms with fireplaces, whirlpool baths, private decks, and the more romantic inn-and-spa angle are a big part of why people choose it.
Peconic, Cutchogue, Mattituck, and Jamesport
The Harvest Inn, Peconic
A good Peconic option if you want to stay in the middle of wine country rather than in the busiest village. It fits best when the point of the trip is to stay close to vineyard stops, scenic drives, and the quieter center of the North Fork.
Blue Iris Bed & Breakfast, Cutchogue
Good for a quieter wine-country weekend with gardens, a small-scale feel, and easy access to nearby vineyards and farm stands. This is more of a personal, tucked-away stay than a hotel-style one, which is part of the appeal.
North Fork Guest House / Mattituck area
Mattituck and nearby hamlets are still less hotel-heavy than Greenport, but they make a lot of sense if you want to be near Love Lane, beaches, and the middle of the Fork. This kind of stay works best when the trip is built around farm stands, wineries, and easy access in both directions.
Aqua Beach Hotel, Aquebogue
Aqua fits well on the quieter western side of the North Fork. It sits directly on Peconic Bay in Aquebogue, with direct beach access, and it is close to wineries, farm stands, golf, and nearby beaches. It makes the most sense if you want a lower-key coastal stay outside the busiest villages.
Jedediah Hawkins Inn, Jamesport
Historic, romantic, and one of the best choices if you want a polished overnight that feels removed from the more obvious Greenport circuit. The inn is a restored 1863 mansion with six individually designed guest rooms, local art, gardens and farmland, and a farm-to-table restaurant, which is a big part of what makes it feel special.
Orient stays
The Inn at Orient
The best-known Orient stay for people who specifically want the far-east end of the North Fork. Good for state-park days, slower mornings, and a quieter weekend overall. It sits at the very end of the North Fork, just a mile from the sea on both the Long Island Sound and Hallock’s Bay sides, which is exactly why it works so well for an Orient-centered trip.
