Mattituck is one of the best places to see several sides of the North Fork in a single day.
Love Lane gives you a compact downtown stretch with shops and restaurants. A few minutes away, you have farm stands, vineyards, beaches on Peconic Bay, and the head of Mattituck Inlet.
It is busier and more activity-driven than Southold, especially in fall, but you can still have a relaxed day here if you avoid trying to cram in every farm and winery.
Walk Love Lane
Love Lane is the center of Mattituck.
It is short enough to walk end to end without much planning, with restaurants, shops and small businesses packed into a few blocks.
This is where to come when you want to get out of the car for a while.
Grab lunch, browse the shops, get coffee, and walk down toward the inlet.
Mattituck’s Chamber of Commerce treats Love Lane as the heart of the hamlet, and it is also where many of the town’s seasonal events are centered.
Spend a few hours at Harbes Family Farm
Harbes Family Farm is one of Mattituck’s biggest family attractions.
The Mattituck location combines a farm stand, Barnyard Adventure and Harbes Vineyard at 715 Sound Avenue. The farm stand sells produce, roasted corn, cider donuts and other seasonal food, while Barnyard Adventure has farm animals, bounce pillows, a hedge maze and other activities for kids.
This is not a quick roadside farm stand in the fall. On busy weekends, Harbes can become one of the busiest destinations on the North Fork.
If you are visiting with kids, give yourself enough time to actually use the Barnyard rather than squeezing it between winery stops.

Try Harbes Vineyard
Adults can also taste wine at Harbes without leaving the farm.
Harbes Vineyard has a wine barn at the Mattituck property, with tastings and wine by the glass or bottle. The vineyard is planted with grapes including Chardonnay, Merlot, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Franc and Malbec.
It is particularly convenient for mixed groups because families can make the farm itself the main stop while adults still get a taste of North Fork wine country.

Go to Veterans Memorial Beach
Veterans Memorial Park and Beach sits on Great Peconic Bay at the end of Bay Avenue.
The park has about 400 feet of sandy shoreline, a swimming area with seasonal lifeguards, a playground, picnic area, restrooms, an outdoor shower, bocce and shuffleboard.
This is a particularly good family beach because you can swim, picnic and let younger kids use the playground without moving to another location.
The important detail is parking.
During the summer season, a Mattituck Park District beach parking permit is required. The district also offers nonresident seasonal permits and daily guest passes, so check the current rules before driving down expecting to park.

Kayak from Mattituck Inlet
At the bottom of Love Lane, the Mattituck Park District maintains the Love Lane Boathouse at the head of Mattituck Inlet.
There is a boat ramp and the site is used for kayaking and paddleboarding. The inlet gives you a very different view of Mattituck than you get from Main Road or the wineries.
Water depth near the head of the inlet changes with the tide, so tide conditions matter.
If you are bringing your own kayak or paddleboard, check the current parking and launch rules before you go.
Spend time along Peconic Bay
Mattituck is bordered by Long Island Sound to the north and Peconic Bay to the south, but the bay side is where many visitors find the calmer water and more sheltered beach setting.
Veterans Beach is the obvious public destination, but simply driving the roads south of Main Road gives you a quieter look at Mattituck away from Route 25 and Sound Avenue.
This is a good part of the day to leave unscheduled.
Visit a winery
Mattituck sits in the middle of North Fork wine country, so there is no shortage of tasting rooms within a short drive.
If you are doing a general Mattituck day, I would visit one or two wineries rather than spend the entire afternoon moving between them.
That leaves room for Love Lane, the beach, a farm stand or dinner afterward.
Reservations, food policies, group rules and whether children are welcome vary from winery to winery, so check before going.

Stop at a farm stand
Even if you skip Harbes, Mattituck is surrounded by farm country.
In summer, that might mean corn, tomatoes, peaches or flowers. By fall, the roadside changes to apples, pumpkins, mums and cider donuts.
You do not need to turn every farm stop into an attraction. Sometimes the better move is simply to pull over, buy what looks good and keep going.

Eat on Love Lane or nearby
Mattituck has enough restaurants that lunch can be part of the town rather than a detour.
Love Lane is especially convenient because you can eat, walk around for a while and then continue toward the farms or wineries.

Come for First Fridays on Love Lane
From May through October, the Mattituck Chamber hosts First Fridays on Love Lane.
The 2026 schedule runs on the first Friday of each month during that period, with live music, food, drinks and shopping from local businesses.
This is one of the better times to see Love Lane feeling like a community gathering rather than simply a row of shops.

Visit during the Mattituck Street Fair
The Mattituck Chamber also holds an annual street fair in July.
The fair takes over the area around Sound Avenue and Love Lane with vendors, food and local businesses.
If you like local fairs, plan around it.
If you are simply trying to visit Mattituck on a quiet summer weekend, know that fair day brings much heavier traffic and parking demand.
Mattituck with kids
Mattituck is one of the strongest North Fork towns for families.
A full day can be very simple:
Morning: Harbes Barnyard Adventure.
Lunch: Love Lane.
Afternoon: Veterans Beach.
Later: ice cream, a farm stand or a winery that welcomes children.
That is enough. You do not need five separate ticketed activities.

Mattituck in fall
Fall is when Mattituck gets busiest.
Pumpkins, apple picking, corn, farm events and wineries pull large weekend crowds to Sound Avenue and the roads around town.
The atmosphere can be fun, but traffic can be slow.
If your schedule allows, a September or October weekday gives you much more room to move around.
On weekends, choose the two or three stops you care about most rather than trying to drive back and forth across town all afternoon.
Mattituck on a rainy day
Bad weather does not ruin the day.
You can spend more time over lunch on Love Lane, browse shops, visit a winery tasting room and stop at farm markets.
If the weather clears later, the beach or inlet is still close enough to add without reorganizing the day.
Greenport is also an easy continuation if you want more shops and indoor stops.
Mattituck or Southold?
Choose Mattituck if you want farms, family activities, Love Lane, wineries and more going on around you.
Choose Southold if you want a quieter day with history, beaches and scenic roads.
They are close enough that a weekend can include both without much driving.

Mattituck or Greenport?
Mattituck is more spread out.
You will probably use the car to move between Love Lane, farms, wineries and the beach.
Greenport is better for parking once and walking between shops, restaurants, the waterfront and ferry.
A good day can start at a Mattituck farm or winery and finish in Greenport for dinner.

A simple Mattituck day trip
If it is your first visit:
Morning: Harbes or another farm stop.
Late morning: walk Love Lane.
Lunch: eat in Mattituck.
Afternoon: choose either a winery or Veterans Beach.
Late afternoon: stop at a farm stand before leaving.
That gives you farms, town, food and either wine or water without spending the day rushing.
Can you visit Mattituck without a car?
You can reach Mattituck by train or bus, and Love Lane itself is walkable.
The difficulty is everything beyond the center.
Farms, wineries and beaches are spread out, so a car gives you much more freedom if you want to see more than Love Lane.
Is Mattituck worth visiting?
Yes.
Mattituck gives you a concentrated version of what people picture when they think of the North Fork: farm stands, wine country, a small downtown, bay beaches and seasonal events.
You can make it a family day, a winery day or simply stop for lunch and a walk down Love Lane.
The town has enough going on that it does not need to be treated as somewhere you pass through on the way to Greenport.
